Once, Belgium was the smallest country with the most nightclubs. These clubs that ruled the 90s were the places to be. The youth would go wild on a Belgian genre called New Beat, which would later become the foundation of techno. Sometimes, you would wait hours in a queue to enter these clubs, even at 8 A.M on a Sunday. People would drive from one club to another. There were the famous starting clubs, the after clubs, the after-after clubs, and so forth.
The clubs turned out to be notorious, but not only in a good way. Violence, noise disturbances, and drugs gave them a bad name and eventually became the reasons why they would close and decrease in popularity. Hearing stories about these clubs from friends and family made me curious to visit and document them, or what is left. Some are already demolished, neglected, and even burned down. This project serves as a way to remember a great time and evoke nostalgia in some people’s minds.
